Brief Introduction
Professor Loukas Mistelis is the Clive Schmitthoff Professor of Transnational Commercial Law and Arbitration at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London and an International Arbitration Partner with Clyde & Co LLP, based in London. As a matter of fact, he was the first professor with a dedicated international arbitration chair anywhere in the world and has been the Director of the School of International Arbitration at Queen Mary from 2001 to 2019 and Director of the LLM programme in Dispute Resolution between 2001 to 2024.
He is also responsible for the Queen Mary Empirical Surveys in International Arbitration which has recorded trends in International Arbitration since 2005. He is a widely published author with more than 15 books and 80 refereed journal articles. He was educated in Greece, France, Germany and Japan and has held visiting professorial post at Columbia Law School, NYU, NUS, Keio University and many other institutions. Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators since 2001, and Fellow since December 2016.
Loukas is an acknowledged authority on international dispute resolution and investment treaty law. In 2006 he was listed as one of the “leading lights in international arbitration” and since 2007 he is listed on the Who’s Who Commercial Arbitration and since 2017 as Global Elite Thought Leaders in International Arbitration. He has been listed in the Legal500 International Arbitration Powerlist since its inaugural year (2019) and in Chambers as Tier 1 Arbitrator.
He regularly sits as an arbitrator and acts as counsel and expert in arbitration proceedings. His substantial arbitration experience covers ad hoc and ICC, ICSID, LCIA, UNCITRAL, GCC, DIAC, PCA, SCC, Swiss Chambers, VIAC, and Moscow cases and also Emergency Arbitrator proceedings under ICC Rules. Cases have covered parties from more than 60 jurisdictions and most industry sectors.
Loukas also sits in the SCCA Court, the CRCICA Board of Trustees, and has various roles in many other arbitral institutions. He is also member of the Academic Council of the ITA (US), the Investment Treaty Forum (BIICL), a member of the Executive Board of EFILA and a former chair of the Academic Committee of the Civil Mediation Council and President of the Court of CEDRAC.
He is fluent in English, German and Greek and has good knowledge of French and basic knowledge of Polish, Russian and Spanish.
